Fundamentals of a law degree: Contract law

Many students and lawyers alike will tell you that contract law is one of the most important modules within a law degree and the law itself. It’s safe to say that contract law controls almost every part of our lives. From a cup of coffee whilst you travel to work all the way through to how the roads we drive on our looked after. With contract law being this crucial to our everyday life it’s easy to see why universities across the country give this topic a place at the front of its teaching.  In many cases contract law is the very first module that a law student will tackle during their studies at university. This means that it’s important to get it right and use this module as a springboard for your studies. We hope that this post can provide you with a good introduction if you have this module to come!

Contract law is a very interesting and in-depth module taught across nearly all law courses. This means that it is likely that there will be something in the module that you will like. The term “Contract law” can seem daunting to most and from the outside that’s justified. However, don’t worry the very elements of contracts are broken down and given to you in a way that you can understand. With the way the module is taught, you can piece the elements back together and form a very convincing argument when it comes to your assessment. This ability to break down a concept and module and rebuild really does give you the skills and qualities to carry this out again in other modules throughout your degree securing you quality grades. The ability to do this and give you these specific skills really makes it a fundamental module to your studies and to the universities teaching methods.

Studying contract law, like many other modules can be applied and used in the real world. Contract law really does allow you to fully understand what you are signing up for and fundamentally what your rights are when you sign said contract. Alongside this, the module can help you in the case of writing a contract as it teaches you what needs to be added and redacted from a contract for it to be binding and legal. This also gives the ability to give sound and well-founded advice to others which ultimately if you become a lawyer will be your day to day job.
No matter what the assessment method is you will have to add your own advice and what you think of the situation given to you whilst looking at the law at hand.

Contract law as stated above is probably one of the most common types of law that we come into contact with every day of our lives. With this, there is a very large area for lawyers to work in and subsequently lots of jobs in these areas. If you enjoy the law, there are plenty of different jobs out there for budding lawyers from working within contract negotiations all the way through to quality controls and regulations. Any of these areas contain contracts in some form or another and there will always be work where contracts are concerned. This real-world application means that the top companies are always looking for employees and trainees in these areas. This can be the most fulfilling and knowledgeable way of training as a solicitor or barrister or any other profession you may choose.

In conclusion, contract law may actually, be the biggest springboard that you will come across in your degree allowing you to improve your studies and then ultimately find a suitable and enjoyable career for yourself in an area of the law you're really passionate about. This alongside the real-world application of the module is why I argue that contract law is a fundamental module of a law degree.
